EN 1253 Standard Guide - Floor Drain Compliance

Complete guide to EN 1253 standard for floor drains.

EN 1253 is the core European product standard for drains used in buildings. It is now an 8-part standard covering water-seal traps, roof drains, mechanical and combined odour traps, and low-profile traps.

EN 1253-1 covers trapped floor gullies with a minimum 50mm water seal — the most common type used in bathrooms and wet areas.

EN 1253-6 addresses low-profile floor drains with water seal height under 50mm, with stricter conditions of use.

EN 1253-7 covers floor drains with mechanical closure (mechanical odour traps), restricted to buildings up to approximately four storeys.

EN 1253-8 covers combination traps (mechanical + water seal), also limited to low-rise buildings.

Key testing requirements include flow rate testing (measured in L/min at a defined head pressure), load class assessment, odour tightness testing, and acoustic performance evaluation.

European specifiers expect full documentation including Declaration of Performance (DoP), EN 1253 type test reports, and corrosion test data available as downloadable PDFs.
