Low Profile vs Standard Floor Drains: Which to Specify?
Floor drains come in two basic form factors: standard-depth and low-profile. Standard drains have a total depth (from grate to outlet) of 80-120mm, accommodating a full 50mm water seal trap. Low-profile drains have a total depth of 45-65mm, with a reduced water seal of 30-50mm. Choosing between them depends on the available floor build-up depth, the application requirements, and the applicable standards. Standard Floor Drains: The Default Choice
Standard floor drains are the default specification for most applications. They provide:
Full 50mm Water Seal: The industry standard for odor prevention. A 50mm water seal column provides reliable protection against sewer gas entry, even under moderate pressure differentials and evaporation conditions. EN 1253-1 requires a minimum 50mm water seal for trapped floor gullies.
Deep Body Construction: The deeper body provides space for a full-size trap, sediment bucket (for catching debris before it enters the plumbing system), and adequate flow path for high-volume discharge.
Proven Performance: Standard drains have decades of field performance data. They handle the full range of flow rates, load classes, and environmental conditions.
Wide Availability: Standard floor drains are manufactured in all materials (stainless steel, brass, cast iron, plastic), all load classes, and in every configuration (point drains, linear drains, trench drains).
Standard drains require a minimum floor build-up depth of approximately 100-130mm to accommodate the drain body, the waterproofing membrane, the tile adhesive, and the tile. This is achievable in most new construction with concrete slabs or deep timber floors.
When Standard Drains Cannot Be Used
Some installations cannot accommodate the depth required by a standard drain:
Renovation Projects: Existing floors may have insufficient build-up depth. A bathroom renovation with a 70mm total floor depth (structural floor + screed) cannot fit a 100mm standard drain without raising the floor level or breaking into the structural slab.
Raised Floor Systems: Access floors (raised floors) in commercial buildings often have a cavity depth of only 50-80mm. A standard drain does not fit within this depth.

Low-profile (shallow) floor drains are specifically designed for installations where the available floor depth cannot accommodate a standard drain. They provide:
Reduced Total Depth: 45-65mm total depth (compared to 80-120mm for standard drains). This allows installation in floors with 60-80mm build-up depth.
Shallow Trap: Water seal depth is typically 30-50mm (compared to the standard 50mm). The reduced water seal provides adequate odor prevention for many applications but with less margin against evaporation and siphonage.
Compact Body: The drain body is designed to fit within the limited depth while still providing adequate flow path and structural strength.
EN 1253-6 Compliance: Low-profile drains with water seal under 50mm are covered by EN 1253-6 (floor drains with reduced water seal height). This standard specifies the testing and performance requirements for shallow drains.
The Trade-Offs of Low-Profile Drains
Choosing low-profile drains involves specific trade-offs that specifiers must understand:
Reduced Water Seal Depth: The primary trade-off. A 30mm water seal provides less protection against:
- Evaporation: In seldom-used drains, the water seal can evaporate completely in 2-4 weeks (compared to 4-8 weeks for a 50mm seal). Low-profile drains in infrequently-used areas may need manual refilling or mechanical seal options.
- Siphonage: Strong discharge from upper floors can siphon the water seal out of a shallow trap more easily than a deep trap. Low-profile drains are more susceptible to trap seal loss in multi-storey buildings.
- Pressure Differentials: Wind-induced pressure fluctuations in drainage stacks can blow through a shallow water seal more easily than a deep seal.
Reduced Sediment Capacity: The shallow body has less space for a sediment bucket. More debris passes through to the plumbing system, potentially increasing blockage risk downstream.
Lower Flow Capacity: The compact body and shorter flow path can restrict flow capacity. Low-profile drains may have lower flow rate ratings than equivalent-sized standard drains. Always verify the flow rate meets the application's requirements.
Limited Load Class Options: The shallow body has less structural depth to resist loads. Very high load classes (Class K, 90 tonnes for industrial forklifts) may not be available in low-profile configurations.
When to Use Low-Profile Drains
Low-profile drains are the correct choice when:
Floor depth is physically insufficient for a standard drain. This is not a preference — it is a physical constraint. If the floor build-up is only 65mm, a standard 100mm drain will not fit.
Renovation projects where raising the floor level is not acceptable (e.g., matching adjacent floor levels, maintaining ceiling heights below, or avoiding structural modification).
Raised floor systems with cavity depths of 50-80mm.

When Standard Drains Should Be Preferred
Standard drains should be the default specification unless floor depth constraints force low-profile:
New construction where floor depth can be designed to accommodate standard drains. There is no advantage to low-profile drains if the floor depth is available.
